Who needs a Seller's permit? If you plan to start a partnership, corporation, or other organization making retail sales or rentals of tangible property or retails sales of taxable services, you will need a Seller's Permit. Applying for a Seller's Permit is very simple and in most cases only takes 3 weeks before you can open your business. If you buy an existing business, the Sellers Permit cannot be transferred to you. You must apply for a new permit in your own name. If you applied for a Seller's Permit before you opened your business, but did not receive the permit at the time of opening the business, you are allowed to make retail sales of tangible personal property and taxable services. However, you are liable for the sales and use taxes and for keeping proper records from the date of opening the business. How hard is it to fill out a form, and how often do I need to do this? Filling out a Seller's permit couldn't be any easier. Once you receive your tax forms in the mail, you can either fill out the paper form and mail it with your post office, call it in with your phone, or file your taxes online. How often you need to file your taxes depends on your qualifications. For more information and to find your local comptrollers office, view the list of states below.
